Garden Blogger's Bloom Day

A few years ago, my blog was purely a gardening blog. And I knew the fifteenth of each month was Garden Blogger's Bloom day. Well, here goes... 

We just moved to our new NS town, Amherst, about three weeks ago. Some of the plants in pots, and healed in the ground, are blooming. One of the prolific weeds in this county is valerian - it is everywhere! This little bit is in our back yard. 

I remember growing in in flower beds years a go. Now it see it as a weed, in my new stomping ground. I will still enjoy it as much as possible. Here are a few final images. These are: a pitcher plant hybrid with a late bloom; St Bernard's lily; and a Persicaria, if memory serves me correctly. Wild & Weedy Wednesday: Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

 

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day is on Thursday, and October in Nova Scotia is quite colourful. The Lobelia above illustrates the 'out of season' blooms you occasionally find, in the garden and in the wild.  Below is a Phlox, and then a very late Bunchberry from the woods.

There are always some late roses, right up to the first hard frosts. We have had a couple light frosts here, downtown, but nothing hard yet. 

My one foliage shot is this Kousa Dogwood, which has had reddish leaves all year long, in its sunny location, and now is at its most colourful.

Miscellaneous Monday: Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - September 2020

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day is the 15th of every month, so here are some views from my gardens at the Parsonage in Digby. This time of year is filled with plants of the Aster family, Asteraceae. Check out other horticultural delights by visiting May Dream Gardens, with a list of many blogs for mid-month.

A white Ironweed (Vernonia). 

I especially like white flowers on a plant that usually is no so.

These Dahlias are new to me this year.

I started these Wingstems (Verbesina alternifolia) from seed a couple years ago, and they have finally flowered. I really like the structure of the flowerhead, it's unique.

Good ole Coneflower (Ecinacea) lasts a long time. These ones actually seeded themselves in the front of the bed, and I never got them moved back deeper.

These perennial Asters are just starting here in NS. A great plant for this soon to be frosty month. And I have some of the short variety yet to bloom. These season-extending flowers are so important up here!

This Rudbeckia keeps on blooming. 

It did not get very tall this year, having been chopped up and transplanted in early summer. 

You will see that I have other days of the week themed for other parts of my life. I may or may not stick closely to these themes. My next day for gardens and nature is Wednesday. Stay tuned!

Bloom Day July 2020

'Tis Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, and things are flowering all over the yard here in Digby, weeds included; I will feature just one of them. After quite a dry spell, here in Nova Scotia, we've been catching up on the rains, and will continue. Just in time.

This little Pitcher Plant, below, was slow emerging again in a galvanized tub bog garden, and did not bloom, but the leaves are a good as any flower to me.

Garden Blogger Bloom Day June 2020

We are "knee deep in June," as a dear gardening friend likes to say, quoting James Whitcomb Riley. And it is Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. I have been away from garden blogging for about five years, so it is time to get back at it! Here are some of the joys of my garden around the house today.

Of course, Iris season continues.

 

Lupins are well-loved here in Nova Scotia, and the ones that volunteer in my beds sometimes surprise me with their colour. But Blue is a great colour, too, and there is plenty of that just now.

  

I have two Korean Dogwoods planted out front. They started off quite small. The white one has never bloomed. But this year, the pink one is about to, for the first time.

I love pure white blooms, and this uncommon perennial, Cruel Plant (Cynanchum ascyrifolium), is just starting its long, showy season.

A month ago I moved May Apples from the Cottage up here to Digby, under the wild Apple tree in the front yard. They are doing just fine!

It is a subtle bloom, but the main attraction of this delicate Euphorbia is the foliage. I must search out a name for this one. It comes up from seed here and there nicely. (Despite the weeds, which are not getting much attack from me yet.)
