Garden Blogger Bloom Day June 2020

We are "knee deep in June," as a dear gardening friend likes to say, quoting James Whitcomb Riley. And it is Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. I have been away from garden blogging for about five years, so it is time to get back at it! Here are some of the joys of my garden around the house today.

Of course, Iris season continues.

Lupins are well-loved here in Nova Scotia, and the ones that volunteer in my beds sometimes surprise me with their colour. But Blue is a great colour, too, and there is plenty of that just now.

I have two Korean Dogwoods planted out front. They started off quite small. The white one has never bloomed. But this year, the pink one is about to, for the first time.

I love pure white blooms, and this uncommon perennial, Cruel Plant (Cynanchum ascyrifolium), is just starting its long, showy season.

A month ago I moved May Apples from the Cottage up here to Digby, under the wild Apple tree in the front yard. They are doing just fine!

It is a subtle bloom, but the main attraction of this delicate Euphorbia is the foliage. I must search out a name for this one. It comes up from seed here and there nicely. (Despite the weeds, which are not getting much attack from me yet.)

And here are a few last bits of colour showing up in my oh-so-untended garden. Check out all the other blogs for Bloom Day, as listed at May Dreams Gardens. See you all next month on the 15th... or sooner.

Iris Season

Well, it has been more than five years since I did any garden blogging, and have not even looked at others much. But I am getting the fever again, so here I am. Just in time for Iris season. Not that it did not begin earlier here in Nova Scotia, but the biggest bearded Irises, and others, are starting now. Here are a few from my garden here at the Parsonage.

The promise of things to come
So, likely by June 15th, Blogger's Bloom Day, I will post again. :) Stay tuned, so to speak.

NSAC Gardens

On the grounds of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, in Bible Hill, one can enjoy plenty of interesting horticulture.

And a few sculptural elements.  But to me, the natural sculpture of the plants themselves is the most enjoyable.  Such as this Allium... nectaroscordum siculum?  Or did this get renamed and is no longer an Allium?  Well, doesn't matter to me.  It was nice to see it.

Can't resist Irises.  And then, at an entrance to the Alumni Gardens, this planting looks like it came right out of a hot, sunny landscape.  These are all plants that will not be spending the winter there, that's for certain!

Love that Kangaroo Paw!
But other, more usual plants caught my eye too.  Like this Mahonia which is surviving here, year by year, fairly well.  My attempt at one of these a few years ago failed.

I love that Euphorbia griffithii 'fireglow'.  And the last of the Azaleas and Rhododendrons were still blooming.  This season, as many across Eastern North America can attest, has been an early one this spring.  So many of the Rhodos are over and done already.  Nice to enjoy the finale.
Though... just last year I learned that there are some later-blooming Rhodos available.  Must get one... once a bed is ready for it at the Cottage.
